BOBBY ENGRAM NAMED PITT WIDE RECEIVERS COACH

PITTSBURGH - Bobby Engram, who played 14 years as a receiver in the National Football League following a decorated career at Penn State, has been named the wide receivers coach at the University of Pittsburgh, it was announced today by Pitt head coach Paul Chryst.

   Engram joins the Panthers after serving as an offensive assistant this past season with the San Francisco 49ers, who won 14 games and the NFC West title en route to the NFC Championship game.

   “Bobby Engram is an outstanding addition to our staff,” Chryst said. “I’m really excited that our players will have the opportunity to learn and benefit from Bobby’s tremendous experience and knowledge of the game. He will be a great teacher on the field and make an even greater impact on our players off the field.”

   Engram’s NFL career spanned from 1996-2009 and included stints with the Chicago Bears (1996-2000), Seattle Seahawks (2001-08) and Kansas City Chiefs (2009). In 176 career regular-season games, he compiled 650 receptions for 7,751 yards and 35 touchdowns. Engram also played in nine NFL postseason contests, including Super Bowl XL when as a member of the Seahawks he had six catches for 70 yards against the Pittsburgh Steelers. In 2005, he was Seattle’s recipient of the Ed Block Courage Award.

   Engram is the most prolific and decorated pass catcher in Penn State history. He was a three-time All-American and three-time All-Big Ten selection from 1993-95, helping the Nittany Lions to a 31-5 record during that span. In 1994, Engram was the inaugural recipient of the Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s top receiver after catching 52 passes for 1,029 yards (19.8 avg.).

   Nearly two decades after his final collegiate season, Engram still ranks as the Nittany Lions’ all-time leader in receiving yards (3,026), receiving touchdowns (31) and 100-yard receiving games (16). He is second in receptions (167) behind Deon Butler (179).

   Engram is the only player in Penn State history to compile 1,000 receiving yards in a season, a feat he accomplished twice during his career (1994 and 1995). He also ranks second in school history with 786 career punt return yards.

   A native of Camden, S.C., Engram and his wife Deanna have two daughters, Bobbi and Phoebe, and two sons, Dean and Trey. 

   Engram serves as a spokesperson for the United Way and established the “Bobby Engram Foundation,” which aids in the research of sickle cell anemia.

   Chryst has now filled eight of the nine positions on his coaching staff. Those appointments include:

   Bob Bostad: offensive coordinator/offensive line

   Bobby Engram: wide receivers

   Eddie Faulkner: running backs

   Matt House: secondary

   Dave Huxtable: defensive coordinator

   Joe Rudolph: assistant head coach/quarterbacks

   Chris Haering: linebackers

   Jim Hueber: tight ends
